Write To Remain Silent ~ UKHHF Review 'From the opening bleeps of the BBC News theme tune, one gets the idea that this isn't going to be a celebration of guns, drugs and big pimpin', and one would be right. Overall the combination of bouncy major beats and matching delivery make Mr Phlo's debut seem jovial, almost novelty - but look past the bubbly exterior -from the first track onward, Phlo tackles a wide range of contemporary issues that he feels strongly about, regardless of whether they're the "in" issue to talk about, and it's refreshing to hear a different viewpoint from the typical political hip hop track. The production is of a consistantly high quality throughout and it's nice to hear some beats that differ form the norm. It's not often you're suprised by a UK hip hop instrumental, but thanks to the numerous producers providing the canvas for Mr Phlo to paint his lyrical picture on, the lengthy running time still manages to stay relatively fresh throughout. Now I often point out that I think Phlo's voice sounds a little bit timid and shaken - it seems he's worked on this and now comes across much more confident. He may not be the most technically dextrous rappers, and ironically his phlo leaves a little to be desired, but with Mr Phlo, it's all about the meaning of the words - not how they sound. All in all, this CD is significantly better than I expected it would be, and I found myself thinking about some of the lyrics and themes long after I had stopped listening. A welcome addition to the UKHHF catalogue. 3/5
